Born For This: The BeBe Winans Story, the hilarious and heartwarming true story of six-time Grammy Award-winning icon BeBe Winans’s journey to fame, will premiere on the Alliance Stage, April 13 – May 15, 2016.  Born For This is directed by celebrated director and playwright Charles Randolph-Wright (Motown The Musical).  The new musical is populated with original music as well as Winans family hits, with book by Randolph-Wright and Winans.

In Born For This, Detroit natives BeBe and CeCe Winans, youngest siblings of the Winans family dynasty, experience the ultimate in culture shocks when invited to join Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker’s Praise The Lord Network.  The Winans teenagers become not only television celebrities, they also become like adopted children of the Bakkers, integrating TV evangelism.  As BeBe and CeCe encounter fame, fortune, and even a young Whitney Houston, BeBe must learn to balance his desire for success with his true calling.

Universal themes run through this personal story.  “When you’re a teenager you don’t think your life is being recorded for others to learn from, or be healed by, or better yet to find strength through your fears and failures,” shared BeBe Winans.  “Now I know that these were God’s plans for my life.  We’re all born for a purpose.  This musical celebrates the journey of finding it.”

Leading the cast as BeBe and CeCe Winans are Winans family members and accomplished performers Juan Winans and Deborah Joy Winans

On Tuesday, March 15, the Alliance will host Behind the Musicala special Q&A event with the creators of Born For This, Charles Randolph-Wright and BeBe Winans, and Music Supervisor Donald Lawrence.  Audience members will enjoy the behind-the-scenes, making-of story of Born For This, moderated by Alliance Theatre Artistic Director, Susan V. NEW MUSIC: Solero

Solero are brothers Jean and Jonathan who hail from Puerto Rico and are signed to P Music Group which is also the home of Charlie Wilson. It was their Spanish cover of his hit “You Are” which caught the attention of the labels president and forced him to sign them. Solero also created quite a buzz in the Latin community with their Spanish cover of Jason Derulo’s “It Girl.”

The Chris Brown cover is the latest in their series of “Acoustic Friday” releases, which will run weekly on their YouTube channel. “Acoustic Friday”

“To see these two young Latin men that not only had star looks but were singing and carrying the vocals of “You Are” consistent with my client, Charlie Wilson, I knew I had to sign them. They were like Mark Anthony meets K-Ci and Jo-Jo." says CEO, Michael Paran

Check out this week’s cover song of Chris Brown’s “Back to Sleep” from his Royalty album Live Now On their YouTube channel.

"The Klan On Trial" from Investigation Discovery's "HATE IN AMERICA"

INVESTIGATION DISCOVERY PREMIERES NEW SERIES HATE IN AMERICA, EXAMINING THE SOUTHERN POVERTY LAW CENTER’S MOST RIVETING CASES, AS ORGANIZATION RELEASES 2015 INTELLIGENCE REPORT

Investigation Discovery (ID) and Emmy Award-winning journalist Tony Harris are teaming up once again with premiere civil rights advocacy organization, the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), to produce HATE IN AMERICA, a new documentary strand that showcases the SPLC’s efforts to combat bigotry and hate groups in the United States. The mission of the SPLC and its legendary founder, Morris Dees, are to combat the hate, intolerance and discrimination perpetuated by these groups through education, litigation and advocacy. According to the SPLC’s 2015 Intelligence Report released yesterday, the number of extremist groups operating domestically grew by 14% from 2014, and the SPLC catalogued an astounding 892 hate groups in the US, including neo-Nazis, white nationalists, black separatists, Klansmen and other groups that target the LGBT community. Produced by NBC News’ award-winning production arm Peacock Productions, the documentary series HATE IN AMERICA kicks off with its first premiere on Monday, February 29 at 8/7c, showcasing the SPLC’s remarkable strides to fight organized hate over the past four decades.

In the first episode of HATE IN AMERICA, titled The Klan on Trial, Harris explores some of the SPLC’s most riveting court cases, starting with the Michael Donald case – a heinous lynching of a young man in the early 1980s that prompted SPLC founder Morris Dees to sue the United Klans of America (UKA) on behalf of the victim’s mother. In this landmark court decision, the UKA’s violent leadership was held responsible for the unspeakably violent and racist acts of its members, helping to turn the tide against organized hate in our country. Harris also digs deep into the deeds of notorious white supremacist murderer Glenn Miller, who most recently made national headlines when he went on a shooting spree at a Kansas Jewish Community Center in April 2014.

WE TV'S ORIGINAL SERIES MARY MARY RETURNS FOR THE FIFTH SEASON ON THURSDAY, MARCH 3 AT 9PM ET/PT

This season Mary Mary learns the gospel truth...Everyone is replaceable

Last season left audiences in limbo with Erica and Tina Campbell focusing on their individual careers...forcing Mary Mary into an indefinite hiatus. The sisters, now in direct competition with each other, are also feeling pressure to keep Mary Mary in the game...even if that means replacing a Mary! Tune in to season 5 of WE tv's MARY MARY, premiering Thursday, March 3 at 9PM ET/PT.

This season, Erica Campbell is at the top of her game having won a Grammy, Dove and Soul Train Award; meanwhile Tina's solo career is on the rise. These, now, solo sisters have become accustom to being at the top as part of the dynamic duo that is Mary Mary; however for the first time ever, they are competing for the same spot on the charts.

In the premiere episode, Warryn Campbell begins to feel pressure from Sony Records to deliver the next, long awaited, Mary Mary album. He immediately enlists Erica to help convince Tina that this is the right time to resurrect Mary Mary. Erica believes she has the perfect plan to get Tina onboard; however, it may not be foolproof as Tina is solely focused on her solo effort and is finally seeing her hard work pay off. With success come countless responsibilities, leaving Tina feeling a bit overwhelmed. Her husband Teddy's task of keeping her from breaking under the pressure proves to be more challenging than expected.
Former Mary Mary manager, Mitchell Solarek, has finally moved on from his tumultuous relationship with the Mary's; and just when he thinks he made a clean break, his new client will only work with one producer...Warryn Campbell. With Warryn on the hook for a Mary Mary album will do everything he can to stay in Sony's good graces; even if the result is making a deal with the devil and possibly recasting Mary Mary.
Can Mary Mary survive the pressures of Erica and Tina's individual ventures and personal lives, or will their success be the demise of Mary Mary? Tune in to season 5 of WE tv's MARY MARY, premiering Thursday, March 3 at 9PM ET/PT.
MARY MARYis produced for WE tv by Entertainment One (eOne) and executive produced by eOne's Tara Long, John Morayniss and Eric Hoberman; WE tv's Lauren Gellert, EVP, Development and Original programming and Kate Farrell, VP of Original Programming serve as executive producers; Erica Campbell, Tina Campbell and Mitchell Solarek.

Scarface Announces 39-City "Icon Tour" Starting February 11

In Time For Valentine Day Houston Legend Releases His Anti-Valentine Day  Single "Keep It Movin" Featuring Avant

Southern Hip-Hop legend Scarface is set to take his critically-acclaimed 12th studio album, Deeply Rooted, on the road, bringing material from his 2015 release to fans across the country starting Thursday, February 11th. The "Icon Tour" will kick off in Tulsa, OK and will run through 38 cities, wrapping up in the rapper's hometown of Houston, TX on Friday, April 1st. Along with the announcement of the tour, Scarface blessed fans with a brand new single, "Keep It Movin'" featuring Avant, currently streaming on Soundcloud.

Following a seven-year hiatus, Scarface made a triumphant return to music last summer, with Deeply Rooted debuting on five charts. Upon its release, the CD was a Top 20-selling CD in the country debuting at the #11 position on the "Billboard 200." "There's no need for Deeply Rooted to make up for seven years of lost time because Scarface's legacy is secure," said Brandon Caldwell of the Houston Press upon the project's release. "But my God does it feel epic at every turn." It was the Top 10-selling digital release in the country landing at the #10 position on Billboard's "Digital Albums" chart. The CD also graced Top 5 positions on Billboard's "Independent Albums (#3)," "Rap Albums" (#2) and the "Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums" charts (#3).

"Scarface has always been one of Hip-Hop's best songwriters and most thought-provoking rappers," said AllHipHop.com of the project, "and this collection of music continues that tradition." "
Keep It Movin'" stands as a perfect example, finding Scarface addressing both sides of his own infidelity and the two resulting breakups. The song follows "Mental Exorcism," "Steer" and "Do What I Do" as the fourth single from Deeply Rooted.

Maurice White
Charlie Wilson

"Maurice White was one of the kindest people I ever met. He never had a superstar attitude and respected everyone. Earth, Wind & Fire were and continue to be a one of a kind group. Maurice's combination of jazz, rock, funk, R&B and pop can never be duplicated. He will be missed but his music will be enjoyed forever."

Macy's Celebrates Black History Month With Conversations with Actress Jurnee Smollet-Bell

Actress and activist Jurnee Smollet-Bell has been on our radar since she was a child and now Macy's is celebrating her spirit as a muse for the 2016 Black History Month.

Jurnee sat down with journalist and fashion guru Constance White to pull back the curtain on what makes Jurnee so fabulous!

Here is her Q and A:

selfieWhat best describes your style? Organic. I feel like my style is an extension of my personality. I dress according to my mood. When I’m lounging around I’m totally a bohemian hippie and love to wear things my mom would’ve worn in the ’70s. Or if I’m hosting a wine and cheese party at my house, I might turn up the elegance.
I kind of approach the costumes that my characters in film and TV wear in the same way. You can visually communicate so much about a character and personality through a necklace, a shoe, a torn stocking.

What items do you consider must haves? Flowing skirts, oversized pants, leather boots, leather jacket, black jeans.

Where did your interest in acting and performing come from? I come from a family of entertainers and artists. I have been in front of the camera since I was 10 months old, so I was kind of born into it.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received so far in your career? Quincy Jones once told me, “You cannot believe them when they tell you you’re great, because you’ll believe them when they tell you you’re not. You must know who you are, who God made you to be.”

If you could play an iconic figure in a biopic, who would it be? Lorraine Hansberry.

Who’s your style icon and why? Liya Kebede. I love how elegant and understated her style is. Not only is she a trailblazer in fashion, but she also uses her platform to advocate for women and children in Africa.
Bianca Jagger, Lena Horne, Jane Fonda, Cate Blanchett, Iman and Diana Ross can also do no wrong in my book. They all were trailblazers and left such a mark on the fashion world. And I was named after Diana Ross (my middle name) so she will always have a special place in my heart.

What are some current fashion trends you love?
• I love lady loafers. Not only are they chic, but they’re so comfortable.
• High-waisted pants, because they really give a nice silhouette.
• Plaid. Especially red. For me, it’s timeless.
• Wearing colorful printed stockings with a dress and casual shoes (boots/sneakers/sandals).

What do you love most about your heritage? I have a complex heritage: my mom is African American and my dad is Jewish. Both were activists and they met during the movement in the ’70s.

What’s the one thing you’ve learned from your grandparents or parents that you carry with you? They taught me to not compromise my values and morals, to not place a price tag on your art.

Who in your life inspires you the most? My mother. She comes from nothing and raised six kids. She’s the strongest woman I know.

Jurnee will be touring to Macy’s across the country to continue the conversation. See below dates and locations coming to a city near you and click here to RSVP.
