Atlanta's Enchanted Closet Presents: Artists and Entrepreneurs Series

Atlanta's Enchanted Closet will be hosting their Artists and Entrepreneurs Series on September 21st at The Villages at Carver Family YMCA at 1600 Pryor Street in Atlanta (30315). The series is designed to introduce girls, ages 12 to 19 to local artists that have leveraged the love of their craft into business ventures.

Girls will have a chance to hear artists share stories about their passions, view their work, and encouraged to unleash their own talents by engaging in the craft of the artists. Artists and Entrepreneurs Series is one of many of the charity's GIRL$ Service-Learning Program events that Enchanted Closet sponsors monthly to provide teenage girls with the tools for greater self discovery, self esteem, and self sufficiency.
Artists and Entrepreneurs Series will be featuring Charlton Palmer also known as 'CP the Artist'. Charlton once put his paint brush for a nine to five job in accounting. After longing for his passion and taunts of family members who reveled on how good he used to be, he picked his brush up and has moved forward full speed in self expression.
When asked why he feels it is important to share his artistry with teens, Charlton responded  "I believe that using my talent and being a positive example can help the youth stay or go in the right direction. I want the youth to believe in themselves, dream big, fight for their goals, and to care about others."
"Being a self taught artist all my life, art is in me. I want my art to portray the essence of life, love, tragedy, spirituality, self expression, hope and purpose. My appreciation and motivation for this artistry is part of my goal of having a long lasting relationship with the viewers", said Charlton.

Another featured artist is Kimanni Thompson aka Kimanni Kouture. Kimmani is a model and fashion designer who started her design business in 2013 at the age of 12. Kimanni Kouture is a reflection of who Kimanni is: creative, happy, full of personality, focused, and strong. Kimanni Kouture is created for the everyday girl as well as the girl who dares to be different.
"We hope that the girls attending this program will feel inspired to grow their ideas into businesses that will benefit them, their families, and the community. The Enchanted Closet will help by offering financial literacy and business development courses, and will allow girls to sell their goods in our boutique, located in the Sandy Springs Plaza", stated Bonita Johnson, Executive Director of Enchanted Closet

Matthew Knowles' Mistress Pens Letter: She Wants Support Upheld and Says Sorry to Knowles Women

Alexsandra Wright
Alexandra Wright
Alexsandra Wright (Baby Boy, Scrubs), the woman who famously became Matthew Knowles mistress rather than the body of work she'd been struggling to build as an actress decided to release a lengthy tell-all letter to Sandra Rose. In it she blasts Beyonce's dad for his alleged refusal to play his part in raising their son. She also details how she ultimately became Knowles' side piece and offered an apology to ex-wife Tina and daughters Solange and BeyoncĂ© for the role she played in tearing apart their family.

“It is with a heavy heart we must head back to Superior Court to continue the fight for the rights of my son Nixon Knowles, who has proven to be Mathew Knowles’ biological son,” she begins in the letter.

“My family and I have exhausted every non-legal avenue to urge Mathew to be a responsible father and to follow the stipulated judgment we reached together, which was approved by California’s Superior Court. The official judgment was filed and dated September 10, 2010. Every detail was covered and agreed to by Mr Knowles after a year of private negotiation,” the letter continues.

“We have attempted to appeal to him and his team to adhere to that agreement and the court’s stipulated judgment in regard to our son’s education, outstanding medical expenses and other issues, with the hopes of keeping this situation private, considering all parties involved. Unfortunately, we have been unsuccessful with any sort of private negotiation.”

The former Scrubs actress went on to express how bothered she is by how public their familial dispute has become.

“I am deeply saddened that our personal business is being aired in such a public forum. As a result of false statements made by sources very close to our situation, rumors and innuendos are openly being spread about my son and me. Naturally the negative words affect both of our families, children and careers. Therefore, I find it unavoidable to remain silent. Those close to me know that my primary concern is my son Nixon’s welfare and well-being; both now and in the future. I feel that it is important for him to know, when he comes of age, that he wasn't a mistake and that he was a product of love!”

Alexsandra then offered somewhat of an apology for the pain that her affair with Mathew caused his daughters and ex-wife, Tina.

“I never wanted or intended to hurt anyone in the process. I regret the pain that I have contributed to his family and to my own family. I have the utmost respect and admiration for both of his daughters – they are both lovely women. I also regret the pain that this situation has caused his ex-wife, Tina, and very much wish one day I will get the opportunity to tell her personally."

Ironically, she ended the detailed letter by requesting privacy.

“My son, my family, and I thank you for your prayers and hope you will understand our need for whatever little privacy we have left during this period. We are extremely appreciative of the family and friends that are standing by us; we are overwhelmed by their generous outpouring of love, concern and support.

“I’m fighting for every single parent and child as I fight for my own.”

OPENING FRIDAY: The Grandmaster

THE GRANDMASTER is the highly-anticipated new film by acclaimed director Wong Kar Wai. Six years in the planning and three years in the making, THE GRANDMASTER is an epic action feature inspired by the life and times of the legendary kung fu master, Ip Man. The story spans the tumultuous Republican era that followed the fall of China's last dynasty, a time of chaos, division and war that was also the golden age of Chinese martial arts. Filmed in a range of stunning locations that include the snow-swept landscapes of Northeast China and the subtropical South, THE GRANDMASTERfeatures virtuoso performances by some of the greatest stars of contemporary cinema.

With THE GRANDMASTER, Wong Kar Wai has made a kung fu film like no other. Years of research
before production and a virtual battalion of martial arts trainers on set ensured that THE GRANDMASTER portrays both the Chinese martial arts and the world of the martial artists with unprecedented authenticity, with fight scenes choreographed by renowned action choreographer Yuen Wo Ping (THE MATRIX, KILL BILL, CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON.) The trio of international superstars at the film's heart - Tony Leung, Ziyi Zhang and Chang Chen - all underwent several years of rigorous and extremely challenging kung fu training for their roles.

Samuel L. Jackson - a huge fan of Kar Wai - has lent his support of the film by signing on as a presenter with Martin Scorsese. "THE GRANDMASTER is a wild ride and an expertly crafted martial arts film. I was blown away by Tony Leung and Ziyi Zhang's performances, and needless to say by Wong Kar Wai's direction; he's a living legend who I've admired for ages, and it's a true honor to lend my support alongside Martin Scorsese."

Atlanta's Alliance Theatr presents the premiere of CHOIR BOY

CHOIR BOY tells the story of Pharus, a young gay man struggling through his final year of high school at a prestigious boarding school for African American men.  He is the target of bullying and teasing from his peers, but also earns the admiration and respect of fellow members of the school’s celebrated choir.  Pharus’s confidence, charisma, clarity of purpose, and talent hide the struggle he endures at school.  The choir is where Pharus can stand out and be different without fear – because he’s the best.  CHOIR BOY is a stunning new play with moving gospel music.

CHOIR BOY opened in New York's Manhattan Theatre Club earlier this month to outstanding reviews and was hailed by  The New York Times as “vivid, magnetic, and moving,” and New York Magazine described it as “gorgeously sung and staged.”  The New York production was extended twice due to popular demand and closed August 11.

CHOIR BOY will run on the Hertz Stage at the Alliance Theatre September 20 – October 13, 2013.  Opening night is Wednesday, September 25, 2013.

Toni Braxton and famed music producer/singer Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds commiserate over their broken hearts on their debut single “Hurt You.”

The emotional tune begins with a soft piano and Babyface singing, “Loving you has caused me so much pain/but you don’t see it/you never see it” before Braxton launches into the drum-heavy chorus “God knows I never meant to hurt you/I never meant to break your heart.”

The single, which was written by Babyface, Braxton, Daryl Simmons and Antonio Dixon,  is featured on the award-winning duo’s upcoming album titled 'Love, Marriage & Divorce'due out December 3.
The duo, which previously collaborated on Braxton’s hits “Breathe Again” and “Another Sad Love Song,” recently reunited in the studio to produce a duets album about love and heartbreak. A topic they’ve both experienced.

“I think because Babyface and I have both gone through divorces, we can relate and we can collaborate together on this topic and make it so others who have gone through this situation can relate,” Braxton said in an interview with Los Angeles radio station, 94.7 The WAVE.

A Fly on the Wall of Conversations With Young Sisters

Its not very often I post my personal feeling about anything, but its my blog and so I have executive rights to do as I please. That being said, I'd like to share my feelings on what I experienced over the weekend with Enchanted Closet's Conversations With Young Sisters

As a volunteer, we offered over fifty girls an opportunity to have intimate conversations with men who are fathers, grandfathers, teachers, athletes and just plain old caring individuals who give a damn. I came prepared as I always do to be on hand while these men offer a bit of awakening, truth, understanding and comfort to girls who came have been dealt a shitty hand in the parent category.

I reflect on much of what was said by these men and I'll start with this, the first man I fell in love with was my dad. He was the love of my life and only man who knew me best and treated me better than any man I've met thus far. Since I haven't yet met my husband, my father remains the standard. He loved and respected us (mother and my other three sisters) and showed us often how a father loves, respects, disciplines and teaches and protects his family.

Without a shadow of a doubt, my dad would have laid down his life for any of us and taken one for anyone who threatened ours. My father was strict and sometimes had a heavy hand. He said what he meant and please believe he followed through on every promise (good or bad).

I remember the fishing trips, camping trips, the first time he made me face my fear of riding roller coaster (he rode too) and all of the fun he created at home. He allowed us to dream and play make believe and he put the most animated remix on any bedtime story. So to hear a little girl say she doesn't have that and to see her stand up and cry because she knows it exists but she can't have it broke my heart.

Enchanted Closet has been blessed beyond measure to have garnered the support of a number of enchanting angels this weekend. I call them angels because only God could send these men to do what they did. You know good men can be great dads, but it takes AMAZING men to be a dad for a day and for someone other than their own children. How unselfish! There were no major TV networks covering this event. This wan't a PR opportunity. They walked in as good men, but walked out with angel wings. The panel consisted of actor/barber-Tony Parker, artist-Charlton "CP the Artist" Palmer, radio show host-Derrick Boazman, educator/ therapist/writer-Michael Frazier, entertainment executives-Torrance Hill and Paris "PK" Kirk, NFL veteran Takeo Spikes and two-time NBA Champion Josh Powell.

One by one, these men stood before a room of captive young girls and offered their wisdom. Some even had their own testimonies but they all wanted to know was, "What can I do to help you?"

What would make a man walk away and not want to move heaven and earth to be there for his children? A little girl?

We had girls who came with their mothers, group home representatives and foster care parents...all women. There wasn't a dad in the room except for the panelist. These girls were gifted an awesome opportunity to ask a dad good 'why' questions and that's when it got real. We had everything on hand except tissues. There wasn't a dry eye in the place. There was no way you couldn't have gone home and not be affected.

I'll say this, Conversations With Young Sisters has been an annual event. I think the conversation should continue and more often.

My father died in 2009, but he gave it all before he died. I'm so grateful he cared enough to love me, support me and discipline me. He still remains the standard.
